The company specializes in 3'6"-gauge equipment, as that is what the New Zealand Railway uses. They mostly offer products in TT-scale (1:120), but have a few S-scale items.

Ron started the company in 1981, with their first advertisements appearing in 1982 showing their first product, the FP7 diesel locomotive. S-Helper Service, created to support the manufacture of new S-scale products, started collaborating with American Models in 1989. This ended in 1995. The future looked bright when American Models announced in 2017 that they had acquired a new and larger manufacturing facility. Unfortunately, Ron passed away on December 4, 2021. Ron's wife, Karen, announced that the company will continue to operate with the same personnel.

Bill runs the company all by himself. All previous products, formerly named "Building & Structure Co." can be ordered again, and Bill occasionally produces a new S-scale kit. Yes, the company name is all-lowercase. Bill will also build one of his kits for you for an extra fee.
The early history is unknown. In 1998 they bought "Building & Structure Co." from owners John Kalin and Pete Smith, who had bought the Tomalco track product line (only). Bill sold the narrow-gauge track products to P-B-L shortly after acquiring them. In 2010 they stopped producing S-scale kits. In 2014 they sold their S-scale product line to "Commercial Scale Models", which ran their products under the brand name "Building & Structure Co.". However, in 2019, Commercial Scale Models suddenly stopped, so Bill bought back the "Building & Structures Co." product line.

The store was started in 1983, a brick-n-mortar hobby store that carries all the model railroading scales. The store subsequently bought the following companies: S Scale America (1994), Chesapeake Models (1995), Plano Model Products (1997; S-scale parts only, such as etched-metal roofwalks), Microscale Industries (2005; S-scale decals only), Details Associates (2005, S-scale product line only), Pacific Rail Shops (2006), Mullet River Model Works (2015), and Oregon Rail Supply's S-scale signals (year unknown). Note that when Des Plaines Hobbies bought Pacific Rail Shops, they bought the tooling and the name; they did not buy PRS' current inventory, which owners John and Felix Verser continued to sell until gone under their other company name Gold Coast Models. Des Plaines Hobbies releases new S-scale products under their "S Scale America" brand. The best way to describe this is that owner Ron Sebastian used S Scale America as their manufacturing arm. It seems that that arm has effectively stopped when Ron passed away. His son-in-law Matt Gaudinsky has started a new company called Scale America that gathers a number of different companies, including S Scale America, to continue to produce items, including S, but as of 2023 has not released any information.

Track Components: code 138 flextrack, turnouts (scale & hi-rail), railjoiners
Fox Valley Models started off manufacturing N- and HO-scale cars and engines. The owner, Matt, is the son-in-law of Ron Sebastian (owner of the Des Plaines Hobbies, since passed away). Matt is an S-scale modeler, and so looking to have hi-rail flextrack and turnouts, he had them manufactured, and thus the company entered the S-scale market. The track components are currently flagged as sold out, but Matt has indicated that a new shipment is expected in early 2023. Please note that the foxvalleymodels.com web site is now abandoned, and you should not visit it.
In 2016 the company announced their S-scale track components, which arrived in 2017. In 2021, Matt joined ScaleTrains as a full-time Senior Product Developer. Matt helped with the acquisition and transfer of the HO- and S-scale product line owned by MTH when that company decided to close. In 2022, ScaleTrains decided to incorporate the Fox Valley Models' N- and HO-scale product line into their own. Matt later on communicated that the S-scale track components that Fox Valley Models has are not part of the transfer of ownership. Simultaneously, Matt announced the creation of Scale America, so speculation is that he will likely continue to manufacture the S-scale track components under the new company's name.

Track Components: the closest match to original A.F. track, sectional track, turnouts, gauges, track bumpers
Trackside: semaphores, signals
This company makes track that is the closest match to the original A.C. Gilbert American Flyer track system.
The company was started in 1940 expressly to manufacture flexible track for O-scale three rail. In the 1950s they invented the "phantom" center rail by making it black to reduce its visibility. 1959 they had added S-scale two-rail track to their product inventory. The name "GarGraves" comes from the founding members' last names. In 1963 Don Roder purchased the company. Today, the company is run by Don's two sons, Mike and Tom.

Bob Blois was Northeastern Scale Models' shop foreman. He had received permission from Jim Doyle (owner of Northeastern) to use the shop's tools, during after-hours, to produce S-scale car kits. Bob named his venture after his wife's maiden name, "Kinsman Scale Models". Bill Boucher did the Kinsman instruction sheets. When Jim Doyle passed away, his heirs took over in the early 1960s and were not as lenient. They discovered that Bob had been using the Northeastern materials without paying for them. Bob went to jail for embezzlement. Presumably the company continued, after that, as they also sold the "Quality Craft Models" line of modern freight cars. Kinsman also sold Andrews and Bettendorf truck kits that had been part of the "Ambroid S Gauge" kit line made by Northeastern Scale Models. Their 1964 catalog showed an address in Salem, New Hampshire, which included a listing of the many parts that they carried as well as metal figures. Bob passed away in 1998. Somewhere along the way, Don Heimburger bought Kinsman. In around 2009 he sold the rights, tools, inventory, and parts to NEPrototypes owned by Bill Morris, who is now the official owner of the Kinsman product line.

The company has a "Modeler's Co-op Program" in place. Basically, it is an arrangement between an interested party (one or more people) and Leadville Designs whereby the interested party underwrites the development costs of a particular subject kit. In return, that party receives a substantially reduced price on each kit. Leadville Designs will then offer the kit as part of the line. For every kit sold to the general market, those who underwrote the costs receive a commission. If the kit sells well, the investors could recover their out of pocket costs and even make money.
The company was started in 2018, and is a spinoff of the former The Leadville Shops and before that, The Cimarron Works.

One of the main manufacturers of S-scale products. Lionel owns the "American Flyer" name and produces S-scale products under that name.
In 2006 Lionel announced that it had officially taken over the assets of K-Line, including inventory, intellectual property, tooling, and trademarks, after it won its trademark lawsuit against K-Line. Lionel made a deal with Sanda Kan, K-Line's principal manufacturer and creditor, who in turn worked out a deal with K-Line's bankers. Lionel from then on controlled and operated the K-Line brand and has the right to completely own it in the future. The 0-4-0 switcher and the end-cab switcher that K-Line had previously announced for S-scale were abandoned. That year they announced the products will be sold under the brand name "K-Line by Lionel" and will appear in packaging that is different from Lionel's standard boxes. A Lionel representative at the large train show in Springfield, MA in January 2025 mentioned that Lionel will no longer be manufacturing any more S products. Apparently their focus is now on the HO-scale market. They are only selling remaining inventory.

Vehicles: "box-scale" diecast vehicles of European prototype
The company manufactures diecast vehicles that are about 3" long. Some vehicles will scale out close to 1:64, but preferences and judgment will have to be used to see how close they really are to S-scale. The parent company, Simba Dickie Group, also owns the Jada Toys product line (another close-to-S-scale diecast vehicles product line), and the Tamiya brand (plastic kits and paints). In the U.S., Majorette products were mostly sold at Toys-R-Us stores, but since that company went out of business in 2018, they are hard to find locally, and most likely will only be found online.
The company was started as Rail-Route in France in 1961, and started producing model vehicles in 1964 under their new name of Majorette. In 1980 they bought Solido, another French diecast manufacturer. Production moved to Thailand in 1987. In 1992, the company declares bankruptcy and they were bought out by Ideal Loisirs, who in turn were taken over by Triumph-Adler in 1996. In 2003, the Majorette and Solido product lines were bought out by the Smoby Group, and the brand name was changed to Smoby Marjorette. In 2007 they declared bankruptcy. In 2010 the asserts were bought by the Simba-Dickie Group out of Germany. In 2015 a tsunami destroyed the company's factory, and they rebuild an ultra modern one. Since 2015, the product line has been completely revised.

The company was started in 1953, as a trademark name created by Lesney Products in 1953 in the UK. The models are designed so as to fit in their boxes, so some scale out close to 1:64, but preferences and judgment will have to be used to see how close they really are to S-scale. Very early models were about 2" long (to fit within a matchbox), but by the late 1960s, the models were around 3" long. The company went bankrupt in 1982. Jack Odell bought some of the company's product line to form the Lledo brand name. David Yeh formed Matchbox International Ltd., which bought most of the Matchbox product line, and became a publicly-traded company in 1986. They also bought the famous Dinky toys (previously owned by Meccano, but it, too, had gone bankrupt in the early 1980s). In 1985 Matchbox products were entirely made in mainland China. The product line was sold to Tyco Toys in 1992, which was bought by Mattel in 1997, combining Hot Wheels and Matchbox within one company. The plan was to make Hot Wheels be "fantasy" cars, and Matchbox be models of "real" cars. By the way, the Dinky brand is completely dead now.

Micro Engineering is probably one of the most important companies in our hobby, as they produce rail that they sell directly, and supply rail wholesale to other companies, such as American Models. The micro spikes are now sold out with no intent to produce them again. Rich Rands recalls that one of their tool & die employees fabricated a small punch press that took staples and cut out the center part of the staple to form the micro spikes. He stated that the other sized spikes were manufactured for them by a company in Europe. Whether that is still the case today, he does not know. He also stated that the flextrack molds were designed and cut by Ken Hatheway. He came up with the concept of using Delrin for the plastic, allowing the spikes to be more realistic in size than other track on the market. He also cut the original patterns for the wood grain for the ties in plexiglass. Rich said that he later used those patterns to cut the new patterns in brass. A 2D pantograph was used to transfer the design to the new steel molds the company cut. Rich stated that the molds (specifically referring to the Sn3 flextrack ones) have always remained at Micro Engineering, since it takes a vertical molding machine to manufacture the track. The reason for the minimum size of an order is the time it takes to set up the tooling for production.
The company was founded in 1964 under the name "Rail Craft Products". in 1972 Bob's son Ron Rands joined the company. In 1981 Bob's other son Richard Rands joined the company. They moved to a 4,000sqft building to manufacture the flextrack product line in 1984. In 1997 Richard left the company. In 2010 Ron's daughter Donna Lauer joined the company. In 2021 they announced their planned retirement and subsequent sale of the company. On August 1, 2022, Micro Engineering announced the purchase of the assets, intellectual property, and inventory of Micro Engineering Inc. by Warbonnet Enterprises L.L.C. of Macon, Missouri. The company will operate under the name of "Micro Engineering Company", and will continue to operate at the same address. On February 28, 2025, Tomalco Track (then owned by Shane Lambert) was sold to Micro Engineering, and Micro Engineering announced that they will start to produce and sell directly, standard-gauge flextrack with rail codes 70, 83, and 100 sometime in 2025.

Most items they produce are available for S-scale. They are pricey, but if you are looking for something specific, it might be worth it. In July 2023, the company announced that Yarmouth Model Works, based in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada, is now a North American retailer for Modelu 3D-printed figures. This is a big boon for those of us in the U.S. and Canada as shipping from England can be quite high. Yarmouth Model Works owner, Pierre Oliver, announced that they will be stocking HO- and O-scale figures that have a North American flavor to them, but that they will be able to order S-scale items by special request. So, if you have been eyeing some of their beautiful figures, but were worried about the high shipping cost, contact Yarmouth.
The company was started in 2015. The name is based on the Welsh word for "modeling".

Decals: can custom-make S-scale decals
John says that he uses the Alps printers, and he can print-to-order. He said that the cost per sheet is the same no matter how many are ordered. For a 5.5" X 8.5" (5" x 7" print area) it is $17.50 (for colored or white decals). If you only need black print, the cost is $6 per sheet. Apparently the color white is very expensive, relative to all other colors. Generally, there are no fees for artwork on any prototype set. If he has developed a set and you want modifications, there may be a small fee based on the amount of changes. Once payment is received (PayPal preferred but checks or USPS money orders are fine), he'll print and ship the order.

The main Sn3 manufacturer. It is believed that Pacific Fast Mail manufactured unpainted figures, which they sold directly, and also sold wholesale to P-B-L. Keren Booth, of P-B-L, hand-painted many of those and they were sold at retail by P-B-L. June's Small World was another painter and reseller of these figures, hence you might find duplicates. A recent interview with Jimmy Booth
The company was started in 1971 in Chama, New Mexico as Peter-Built Locomotive Works, named after the owner Bill Peter, and later renamed to just P-B-L, to upgrade HOn3 and HO-scale locomotives. In 1980 they released their first Sn3 locomotive, the K-37, followed by the K-27 (#453 and #461). In 1981 they bought the Cascade Line of Sn3 kits and trucks. At some point in time they bought the C&S plastic freight car kits from Overland Models, Inc. (who, in turn, it is believed, bought them from Berlyn Locomotive Works). In 1986 P-B-L bought Chama Model Shop from Jim Finnell (produced white metal castings that came with P-B-L's kits); the product line was integrated into P-B-L's Triangle Scale Models product line; the automotive vehicle kits were integrated into the new Milestone Autos product line. In 1990 they moved to their present location, Ukiah, California. George Hall wrote an article published in the July 1995 issue of Model Railroader magazine describing the history of P-B-L and their current status (as of 1995, that is). When Tomalco was sold off, P-B-L acquired the Sn3 track products (Tomalco Track, owned by Larry Morton, took over the standard-gauge track products). As it turns out, the molds for the Sn3 track components are owned by P-B-L, but they reside at Micro Engineering, who are the ones that actually make the products for P-B-L. Video of interview with Bill Peter. Video of Jimmy Booth talking about brass trains (here's another one). The company is run by Bill Peter, Jimmy Booth, and Keren Booth.

In November 2023, John announced the company is for sale. Contact him if you are interested in taking over his product line. He will work with anyone in the U.S.
The company was started in 1966. In 1974, with his brass caster, Jeff Thompson, they came up with the name Railmaster. In 1984 the company started exporting Sn3 kits via Scenery Unlimited. In 1988 they sold Railmaster, with a commitment to not sell any kits in New Zealand for three years thereafter. Railmaster Exports was born to only sell outside New Zealand. For a few years in the 2000s, a company in California, called Railmaster Hobbies, served as the company's U.S. distributor. However, in 2017 John Agnew indicated that Railmaster Hobbies are no longer his U.S. distributor (he now sells direct to customers only; Railmaster Hobbies in California is just a regular hobby shop now).

The company was started in 2015 by several individuals who previously worked for Athearn (Horizon Hobbies). In January 2021 MTH and ScaleTrains.com announced that ScaleTrains bought the MTH (i.e. the former S-Helper Service) tooling. In 2022, the company renames itself from ScaleTrains.com to ScaleTrains. In 2022 the company announces the pre-production of former SHS/MTH box cars, hopper, and extended-vision caboose, as well as the track components. In the latter half of 2023 they released their first two S-scale freight cars. As a side note: the company also announced in 2022 that they have bought Fox Valley Models, but FVM previous owner, Matt Gaudinksy later indicated that his S-scale track components will be sold under the new "Scale America" company, and were not a part of the FVM sale to ScaleTrains. ScaleTrains is a growing company with around 50 employees (in 2024).

In 2016 Round 2 LLC, a new company owned by Thomas Lowe, bought the rights to produce the Johnny Lightning brand and started producing models again. Tomy owns Ertl.

Scenery: They are the North American retailer for Modelu 3D-printed figures, and can special-order any S-scale figures
The company is the North American dealer for Modelu figures. Owner Pierre Oliver indicated that he can order any of the Modelu figures in S-scale, but he does not stock them, so there may be some delay in shipping.
The company released a number of S-scale box car kits that were based on the Pacific Rail Shops' bodies. Unfortunately, this had to be stopped, because Des Plaines Hobbies owns the PRS rights, and so copies cannot be sold legally. Yarmouth's owner, at the time of their release, was unaware that there was still a copyright claim in effect. The few kits that were sold received glowing reviews.
