The kit was initially created by the Potomac Valley S Gaugers club. The model is based on a Norfolk Southern prototype. The kit was later offered by Lehigh Valley Models, and is still available via Lehigh Valley Models' successor K & P Brick. The prototype photo shows the structure upon which the kit was based. Dan Vandermause took in January 1974 at the old Norfolk Southern engine facility in Norfolk, VA. The first version of "Norfolk Southern" ran in the state of North Carolina and Virginia and was purchased by the Southern Railway System in January 1974. When the merger of Southern Railway and Norfolk and Western happened, the old "Norfolk Southern" name was resurrected for the new merged railroad. A product review of the kit can be found in the January 2006 issue of the S Gaugian magazine. A partial construction article by Gaylord Gill appears in the April/May 2017 issue of The S Scale Resource magazine (the finished model is shown here). Gaylord made the following changes to the stock kit: replaced printed paper stonework with cast plastic, replaced wood dowel/thumbtack vent with HO-scale plastic part, used scribed basswood around the tower instead of the suggested tarpaper, and added a working overhead light. The box shown in the third photo is of the kit before Frank Titman took the project over and released it under Lehigh Valley Models.
