Sears Kit homes were pre-designed and pre-packaged homes offered through the Sears catalog, and all of these supplies were shipped, by rail (primarily), to the homeowner who either chose to build the house himself or use a contractor to arrange the construction. In most cases the framing lumber was pre-cut and labeled, allowing the homebuilder to follow an instruction booklet to help in the organized construction process, much like our model railroading kits. These kit homes were manufactured from 1908 through 1942.

Notes:
Shotgun homes are common in Louisiana and many other places throughout the U.S. So named, because one could figure a shotgun at the front door and hit the back door. In other words, the house is one long walk-through building. They are great for hot areas (before a/c), as the wind can breeze through the building.
