These Type 27 tank cars were built from 1927 well into the 1940s. American Car & Foundry built more than 1,800 of them. They were the most common type of tank car in the first half of the 20th century. These cars were used to carry petroleum, alcohol, ammonia, chemicals, molasses, and vegetable oil. Most were rebuilt for use as maintenance-of-way cars well into the 1980s.
