The kit consists of photo-engraved brass body parts (ends were soft metal in later runs), wood shapes for the clerestory roof, brass wire, and K brake components (which are not prototypically-correct for these cars).

In addition to building the model, Dick Karnes has added scratchbuilt underbody structural components made of styrene and ABS, as well as commercial components from Miller, B.T.S., Q-Car, and Prototype S Parts. The trucks are from S Scale Locomotive & Supply. The coupler housings are Super Scale. The roof vents are from Train Stuff. The kitchen ice hatch is a Walthers HO-scale part.
