The remainder of the photos apply only to the DC versions of these engines; AC and DCC locomotives were unaffected. For DC versions, Don Thompson reports that there were two kinds of eight-pin DC shorting plugs. They will both work, but one will cause the engine so run in the opposite direction. This first photo shows the normal DC shorting plug for engines without a speaker (part #653-X00???).

For some reason, the factory, on the entire run of the SW1 engines, wired the motors to the wrong socket. The fix was a DC shorting plug with the motor lead pins wired correctly. These plugs have a glob of hot-melt on top. In the photo, you can see red wires in the hot-melt. Note that these boards with the red wires were for the SW9. The boards for the SW1 have baby-blue wires (no photo available of those).

Matt Hogan provided additional photos of the DC shorting plug that he was able to purchase in 2024.
