627 flat car with 627 orange girder beam load which was produced from 1946 through 1950 in nine variations. The variations are broken down into three major groupings. The first grouping consisted of cars produced in 1946 and 1947 with plastic chassis that has three variations. The first, as shown in the photo, has a light gray body with link couplers with thin shanks. The second is like the first except the body is white. The last variation made in 1947 has an unpainted dark gray body with link coupler that have a thick shank. The second grouping has five variations all of which have die-cast bodies that were produced from 1946 through 1950. One was produced in 1946, two in 1948, and two in 1949 and 1950. The third grouping has one variation that was produced in 1950 only with "AMERICAN FLYER LINES" stamped on the side of the gray body instead of "C&NWRY 42597" that was typical of all previous variations. The A.C. Gilbert model is very accurate, given its production era.

The #628 was produced from 1946 through 1953 in nine variations. The variations are broken down into three major groupings.
The first grouping consisted of two cars produced in 1946 with plastic bodies. The first has a gray body with link couplers that have thin shanks. The second is identical except that it has a white body.
The second grouping has six variations, all of which have die-cast bodies. Four of the six variations in this group were produced in 1948. One variation was produced from 1949 through 1953. The last has metallic blue body that was produced in 1953. The last variation group consists of one variation produced in 1952. According to Greenberg the 1952 variations of this car and the #636, #643 and #928 all have "pressed wood" chassis. It is believed that Gilbert used both Bakelite and/or "pressed wood" on these models in 1952.

This car was produced from 1952 through 1954. The 1952 model was either made out of Bakelite or pressed wood. All others were all plastic. Due to the Korean war material shortages, Bakelite was used, but it didn't hold the paint very well over time. This car is one of only eight cars that came with knuckle couplers in 1952.

Notes:

This car was produced through 1966 in eight variations. The first four of the eight were all produced in 1958-61 and all had knuckle couplers and utilized a die-cast lamp bracket. The first of these four variations has a red motor generator. The second variation has a yellow motor generator. The third and fourth variations of this group both have yellow generator and die-cast lamp brackets and Pike-Master Couplers. One of these two has the generator secured to the car chassis by means of two screws while the other is secured using a different method. The remaining four variations of the eight were produced from 1962 through 1966, and all have Pike-Master trucks and couplers and steel lamp brackets. Two of these four variations have a black floodlight housing (see the second photo). One has a 1/8" hole in the center of the chassis that appears to have been a chassis that was intended for another use. The other two have white light housings, except one has a gun-metal-gray steel lamp bracket while the second has the standard silver bracket. Note that the light lights up when power is supplied to the rails.

There were 4 variations produced of this car. Each of them is shown in the first four photos.

The rarest car, which was only produced for two months in 1950, after which the design was changed. This version held the load in place using riveted box car door guides instead of the later wooden blocks.

(image copyright © Ted Hamler; used by permission)
This is the next rarest version, which is the red body color also produced in 1950 and used a wooden block to secure the cages and truck load.

(image copyright © Ted Hamler; used by permission)
Due to the Korean War in 1952 and early-1953, material shortages forced A.C. Gilbert to produce the car using, what is commonly referred to as, pressed wood for the car body. The pressed wood variation lacks the details such as steps and brackets on the side. The substitution did create some issues, such as paint not adhering to the pressed wood bodies. Once the paint chipped off, it exposed a brown/tan chassis that is typical of the pressed wood version.

(image copyright © Ted Hamler; used by permission)
The most common version is the yellow die-cast model with a wooden block to secure the cages and truck. It was produced from 1950 through 1953.

The cannon in the foreground also has a hollow shank but does not have lever, which was sold by K-Line and made in China. The cannon on the 1961 Pike-Master flat car is the most common reproduction version often seen with this flatcar however it does not have a solid shank and no lever, and it was made in Japan.

This car came in four uncataloged sets, one of which was the #20182 "Prestone Special" set that contained the rare painted #24030 MKT box car. As you will note from the photo the car carries no number imprinted on its sides, thus the Greenberg guide lists the number in parentheses. The two variation have to do with the color and material of the three pipes which are the load for this car. The rarer variation has three orange cardboard pipes, while the more common variation has three silver plastic pipes.

Notes:

This car was produced in 1962 and 1963 in only one variation. The Corvette load is the same one used in the Auto-Rama racing sets less the motor. The Corvette came unassembled with racing number "14" or "51".

Notes:

This car with the search light load was never cataloged. The car's body was painted a Tuscan red, with white lettering. Unlike the CNW #934, the number 934 was printed on the side of the car as well and in the indented area of the black base. Also, note the car has additional realistic information printed on the side of the car such as weight and capacity. It is not abnormal for Gilbert to have two cars with the same number and different road names in different years, so these two examples are typical of some American Flyer trains. Note that the light lights up when power is supplied to the rails.
