Several were painted by custom-painters here in the U.S. before being shipped to the final customer. Brian Jackson recommends cleaning the gearing with mineral spirits to dissolve the old grease. He puts the gearing in a container for a few minutes and then uses an old toothbrush to clean. The mineral spirits may take a while to evaporate, but it helps if you soak it up with a paper towel. He then re-lubricates them with a gear oil called Super Lube with PTFE (Menards carries it, or you can order it online). It is a little heavier than Labelle's. For the wheels and axle bearings, he uses the Labelle medium weight oil.
