Notes:

In the model railroading community these were labeled as "Phase II" models. Bill Winans offers these tips for improving the stock models. The drive is under stress (leading to noise and overheating of the motor), which is caused by the overlapping shafts between the two axles in the trucks. The shaft coming from each axle's gearbox is just a hair too long. If you grind/cut just a 1/32" to 1/16" off of each of those half round shaft ends, it will allow the axles and shaft bearings to run free. No other adjustments needed, and you could probably cut more off, but don't do it until you know you have to. Before making the modifications, Bill states that you can check this first by taking the truck(s) off of the engine and turning the input shafts by hand. Then, take the side frames off and turn the shaft again. It should turn much more easily. You can also separate the two gearboxes and check each one by themselves. He also recommends applying LaBelle 102 gear oil to each gearbox, and turn the engine into 8-wheel electrical pickup.
