Notes:

There were a total of 22 variations of this car from between 1946 and 1953. Six variations were offered in 1946, which have either white sides with tuscan roofs and ends, as shown in the photo (foreground), or they are all tuscan in color. All 1946 models have thin shank link couplers. In 1947, the #633 was either red or tuscan. Both variations have thick shank link couplers. Three variations were produced in 1948, all of which were either red plastic or were painted red. The frames were either die-cast or sheet metal. The second #633 in the photo (background) is a 1948 red plastic model with a die-cast frame. Finally, from 1949 through 1952 there were five variations produced in tuscan painted over a gray body or red plastic or red painted bodies.

This was an uncataloged item. The #957 has only one variation. The one odd feature about the #957 is that the control button has "957" imprinted on it and as such is the only car that has the catalog number imprinted on the control button making this a unique item. In 1958, the #957 was replaced with the #25042. The car came with four metal barrels.

This is an operating car that has two separate doors on one side, and a single center door on the other side. The 1953 and 1954 #974 were marked for "American Flyer Lines" on the single-door side, and just "974" on the two-door side. The Erie version, released in 1955 only, had the Erie road name, number, and data on the left side and the logo and data on the right-hand side of boths sides of the car. These cars came with a push-button controller, #712 Automatic Track Rail, four milk cans, and four crates.

Notes:

The 25061 boxcar was produced in 1961 in only one variation. Although the car was produced in the Pike-Master era of 1961, the car came with sintered-iron trucks and knuckle couplers. If one were to elect to use the car on a Pike-Master layout, one would have to use a section of #26700 track and four #26342 Adapter Pins as shown in Photo #2 in order to utilize the #712 special rail section to activate the action of the car. The car would "explode" when the control button was depressed while the trip lever on the car was making contact with the #712 Special Rail Section. Photo 3 shows the "mouse trap" type of mechanism that is held open by means of a solenoid. Once the button is pressed, the solenoid would become energized causing the spring loaded trip mechanism to slam against the sheet metal frame causing a shock to the car frame that would cause the five pieces of the box car body to fall apart.

This is a #913 that was damaged, so Holt repainted it into the Lehigh Valley mid-1950s paint scheme. He used Testors flat enamels for paint, applied Microscale decals and Model Graphics dry transfers, and sealed them with flat clear lacquer. For the prototype, Bethlehem Steel built 1,000 of these 63000-series box cars for the LV in 1950, many of which served for 20 years.

The #937 was produced from 1953 through 1958 in four variations. The first variation, shown in the photo, was produced in 1953 and 1954. It is painted yellow over a clear shell and has either a one-piece or two-piece brake wheel. Variations two and three were produced in 1955 and 1956, and both have painted yellow sides, tuscan painted ends, and roof with Type I sheet metal frames. Type I sheet metal frames have a hole in each corner used by rivets to secure the frame to the body. One of these two variations has a Type 8 truck on one end and a Type 8A truck on the other end. The other yellow and tuscan variation has type 9 trucks. The fourth variation produced in 1957 and 1958 has painted yellow sides and tuscan painted ends and roof. These models have a Type II sheet metal frame. The Type II sheet metal frame uses a screw in one end lower part of the body to secure the body to the frame at one end. On the other end of the car, the tab on the frame fits into a slot.

"The Katy" box car was produced in 1958 only and in just the one variation. This is a very rare car, because it was produced in 1958 only, offered in only two higher-priced sets, and as a separate sale item in a year in which Gilbert dropped the production of many items early in the year due to the poor economic conditions.

Notes:

The #24065 was produced from 1960 through 1964 in four variations. The first variation produced in 1960 has sintered-iron trucks and knuckle couplers. The second variation produced starting in 1961 for the remaining years has a light green plastic body and Pike-Master trucks. The third variation is painted light green over and orange body. It also has a Type II frame that was modified for a Hayjector assembly that was not installed and has Pike-Master trucks. The fourth variation, shown in the photo, is like the second except the NYC sticker is purple, whereas the normal sticker is black and white. Some believe the normal black area of the sticker turned purple because of sun exposure.

Notes:

The #25082 was produced from 1961 through 1964 and has two major variations. The first variation has an orange painted body mounted on an unmodified type III frame and lacks the Hayjector mechanism. The second major variation has an orange painted body. Within this variation, the lettering is (the most-common) white or (the rare) gray. In 1961, the #25082 that was sold separately, came with two track trips; one for new Pike-Master track and a second trip to be used with the older style track (see the second and third photos).

Notes:

The #642 from 1951 and 1952 was changed in 1953 to the Seaboard road name, a more realistic name like several other cars in 1953. The 1953 Seaboard has four variations, all of which are painted tuscan. One is painted over a clear body with either a flat of semi-gloss finish. The second is painted over a white body with a flat finish. The third has a flat tuscan finish that is painted over a black body. The fourth is a shiny tuscan finish that is painted over a black body.

However, he also came across a somewhat damaged #942, so he fixed, repainted, and re-lettered it for the D&H. The paint scheme is from the early 1950s, as delivered to the D&H by Pullman Standard.

Notes:

1961-62 Gilbert once again broke from their standard where all items carried a 5-digit catalog number. They produced three engines and three cars, many of which were uncataloged. This car was part of the uncataloged set 20212. There were only 200 sets made with one car in each set.
