In 1979 the boxes were a bit too narrow which resulted in some of the "nibs" on the sides of the door latches to break off. Starting in 1980, Lionel increased the box width by 3/16" to eliminate this problem. A #9700 without broken "nibs" carries a price that is approximately 70% higher. This model was produced by Fundimensions, a division of CPG Products Corp, itself owned by General Mills, who owned the Lionel brand name at the time.
