#21205 is powered, while #21205-1 is non-powered. The square step version shown in the secondary photo was assigned its catalog number on 9/6/1960 that was cataloged in 1961 only. There are two variations of the 1961 #21205; one variation has square steps as shown in the photo while the second has streamline step (see foreground model in the main photo). The double unit numbered 21205/21205-1 that was sold in 1962 as an uncataloged item has one variation. All of the 1962 #21205/21205-1 versions have streamline steps.

#21206 is powered, while #21206-1 is non-powered. This model was first believed to have been produced in 1962 only, however, since 1994, it has been discovered that the Santa Fe F9s were produced in 1961 as well. Two of the variations do not have front couplers; one has the reverse unit on the rear of the front truck while the second has the reverse on the rear power truck. The unit featured in photo is an example of the second of these. The third variation that has a value assigned by Greenberg as "NRS" has an open pilot with an operating front coupler on the #21206. The reverse on this unit is located on the rear power truck and it does not have an air intake in the roof. The three variations of uncataloged 21206/20206-1 F9 were part of only two uncataloged sets. The two sets the Santa Fe F9s were part of the 1961 General Merchandise Special set #20201, and the famous #20212 Whites Auto Store Special Set.

#21207 is the powered unit, while #20207-1 is the non-powered one. These models received their catalog number on 6/11/1962. The GN was not sold separately but was part the 1963-64 #20764 Klondike set. There are three reported variations. Two of the variations are listed in Greenberg with a value of "NRS". The common variation has an orange plastic shell with a dark green painted roof as shown in the photo. The common #21207/20207-1 does not has a front coupler, nor an operating headlight. The two "NRS" versions are as follows. The first of these has an orange plastic shell with a green painted roof. It has an operating headlight on the #20207. The second "NRS" unit is painted orange and dark green over a blue plastic shell and it does not have an operating headlight.

The unit in the foreground is the pre-production unit, while the one in the background is the standard production unit. Pre-production unit differences to note are the squared-off steps, smaller pilot opening, no headlight, no bumper on the rear set of trucks, and no date stamp. This is the only pre-production unit known in existence.

#21215 is powered, while #21215-1 is non-powered. These were produced in 1961 and have three variations. The first has an unpainted yellow-orange plastic body. The second variation has a yellow unpainted plastic body. The third variation is painted yellow-orange over a gray shell and is dated JUN 1961. The #21215/21215-1 in the photo is like the third variation, however, it does not have the JUN 1961 date stamp. Although cataloged in 1961 the illustration in the catalog was of the 21215/21216, which was never produced.

The second photo shows the 21215 and 21216 pre-production models. Only 4 or 5 of these are known to exist. They were used in all of the advertisements and in the 1961 catalogs but were never made. What was made and sold was the 21215/21215-1 (as shown in the main photo). The pre-production models have the squared-off steps. All production models have streamlined steps as a result to a design change after the pre-production or sample run of 4-10. During the inspection process it was discovered that the square step would break off very easily and in many cases would also break out the plastic on the side in the area where the motor mount protruded through the body. To add strength to the body of the locomotive and prevent the breakage of the steps, the design was changed to create the streamline steps for all production models. Note that the "21216" number was changed to "21215-1" in the actual production run.

1961-62 Gilbert once again broke from their standard where all items carried a 5-digit catalog number. They produced three engines and three cars, many of which were uncataloged. This model was cataloged in 1962 only and has one unpainted red plastic variation.
