A.F. Product Gallery: 1956 Flat Cars

Manufacturer:American Flyer
Manufacturer ID:956
Category:Flat Cars
Road Name:Monon
Road Number:956
Year Introduced:1956
The #956 was produced in 1956 and 1957 in only one variation. Photo #2 shows the single #956 that has been found with two RISS trailers instead of the A.F. trailers. It came from a RISS store in Maryville, Indiana who also sold American Flyer trains. It is likely that the dealer switched the two A.F. trailers with RISS trailers.

Road Name:Southern Pacific
Road Number:971
Year Introduced:1956
This car actually had three different numbers during production, in 1956 and 1957 it was the 971, sometimes found in a box numbered 25015, then from 1958 through 1960 it was the 25016, and then was produced from 1961 through 1964 with Pikemaster plastic trucks and couplers and numbered 25058, which is the most rare version. At first produced with a wire brakewheel (missing on the car in the photo), that was soon replaced with the one-piece all plastic brakewheel. Typical of A.C. Gilbert, the two men earned names, "Moe" and "Joe." in their advertising. This is one of only two Southern Pacific cars that A.C. Gilbert made (the other being the #934 floodlight car).
