The #740 was produced from 1952 through 1954 and has three variations. The first variation, made in 1952 and shown in the photo, is considered to be an early version. It has "AMERICAN FLYER LINES" in black letters without stripes, a shield, and vent holes. The second also produced in 1952 has a shield and stripes and can be found with and without vent holes. The last variation has a shield no stripes and has vent holes. Ted also covered this handcar in the May 2011 issue of the S Gaugian magazine.

Produced from 1952 through 1957. Eight variations were produced, but only one of which was produced in 1952. Shown in the photo are two variations. In the foreground is the 1952 model, which carries the road name of "AMERICAN FLYER" This car was only available in 1952 as part of the K5210 American Flyer Four-car freight set. Although the illustration in the catalog shows a #645, the car that was part of the set is the one shown in the photo. The #945 shown in the rear of the photo carries the road name "AMERICAN FLYER LINES" which is typical of all of the other seven variations of the 1953-57 models.
