These are three #718 Operating Mail Cars. The car in the front is a rare 1947 red plastic New Haven #718 Mail Car that has a die cast chassis. In addition, the car is shown with a #713 Pick-up Stand and Mail Bag. Note the 1947 model came with a red pick-up arm. One must be careful when obtaining one of these units as the arm can easily be altered (painted red). In middle is an example of a 1948-54 model of a red plastic New Haven #718 Mail Car that has a die cast chassis. In addition, the car is shown with a #713 Pick-up Stand and Mail Bag. The model in the photo is actually a 1950 model and note that it has a black pick-up arm. In the back row is an example of a 1946-54 model of a dark red painted American Flyer Lines #718 Mail Car that has a sheet metal chassis. The AFL version can have either a sheet metal or a die cast chassis. The painted versions are red, green, or tuscan, while the unpainted plastic versions are either red or green. Greenberg list the car as being a 1946-54 model except other sources indicate it was in one case a 1952 model while another source I have indicates it was a 1953 model only. Finally, Greenberg and other such sources indicate that the #718 Mail Car was available in 1946 with an inside pick-up. Several noted Flyer Collectors/Experts have stated that the #718 was never produced in 1946 with an inside pick-up and that the first year the #718 was produced was in 1947.
