A.F. Product Gallery: Accessories by ID: #26739

Manufacturer:American Flyer
Manufacturer ID:26739
Road Name:Steam Whistle Control
Year Introduced:1957
The #26739 was produced in 1957 and 1958 in only one variation. The #26739, as described in both the Greenberg and the Doyle books, appears to be identical to the #710 1955-57 Steam Whistle Control, as shown on this web site. The #26739 shown in the photo does not match any of descriptions listed by these references. In 1958 the #26739 shown in the photo was sold with the uncataloged #293, the #21099 locomotive that was part of the #20345 Meteor set as well as the #21129 which was part of the #20470 NYC Pacemaker set. Photos of these two sets as well as that of the #293 all indicate that the #26739 actually was packaged as shown in 1958 to include the distinctive and unusual salmon-colored electronics tube. In 1957, Gilbert converted their numbering system to the new 5-digit system. For many accessories the boxes carried the new 5-digit number however the accessory inside was still the same as the old 3-digit number. In conclusion, Ted believes that #26739 was redesigned during 1957 and the new design as shown in the photo was produced and offered in 1958 only.
